PLATE 12: ENCAMPMENT IN THE HONEYFIELDS. A week later Wheeler ordered the encampment moved in the heart of the honeyfields. Large rations of honey were immediately issued to all members of the expedition; Peter sensing something amiss refused to have anything to do with it. Problems began very soon afterwards, as he recorded in his flight log: “ Something is afoot. All day the men have been pensive and distracted. To a man they have been watching the skys, as if they await a some great coming. Wheeler has suspended all flights and activities indefinitely! How dearly I would love to resign my post!”
