PLATE 13: LOST SOMEWHERE ON HORSEY ISLAND. From Peter’s diary: “No one will talk about what happened last night. Most of the men have deserted. The situation is horrendous, those left are in shock.” It now seems likely that expedition had an acute case toxic delirium, caused by the ingestion of poisonous beach rhododendron honey. This powerful delirient lies dormant in the system for several days, leaving the victim feeling pensive and sluggish before causing a temporary, but powerful, madness. After a couple of days spent regrouping, the expedition staggered on, now only equipped with two broken gliders, a leaky cockle boat, and a few skeps of the toxic honey.
