Tired, hungry, and traumatized, MacRupert started to lose what was left of his senses - one morning Peter was awaked by a rustling and splashing in the rushes. He reached the waters edge just in time to see Bindon disappear into the fog in the cockleboat, arms raised aloft. Peter himself was found several weeks later by local otter trappers, suffering from exposure and muttering incoherently in German. He was sent to Hampstead Free Hospital in London, where he eventually recovered his senses.
