PLATE 5: TESTING WIND CONDITIONS, BRAUNTON BURROWS. Once the gliders had been rebuilt, the task of testing and assessing wind conditions began. Peter realized that the weather conditions had to be perfect - too much wind and the lightened gliders would be torn to pieces; too little and and their heaviness might render them unable to fly. However, the tests went very well, and Peter began to feel optimistic that his improvements might lead to sustained flight times.
