PLATE 8: THE FAGGOT CARRIER. In August, events took an ominous turn. On a routine reconnoiter of the countryside, Captain Hugh Wheeler, acting head of the expedition, encountered a local fagot gatherer who claimed to know where vast quantities of intoxicating honey could be found. Wheeler, thinking this could be the oft discussed “Chewton Mendip Mother Hive” decided to change the expedition’s course to focus on discovering these honeyfields.
